The thrill is gone

So I just got a new Pixel 2 after my Moto G5 Plus took a dip in the Atlantic. And while I am very happy with the device and Android Pie, after getting things set up and playing around some I realized that the "new car smell" wears off quickly.

This is not a rant or complaint, I just find it less exciting then it used to be. I was a crackberry die hard in the beginning. Constantly flashing new roms and hybrids, and scanning the forums for anything new to download. Then I switched to Android and did the same thing. My phone had to have the latest os version and invite only / beta apps.

I guess I just find myself doing the same 5 or 6 things on my phone now and the bells and whistles just aren't as thrilling. Anyone else here experienced the same?

It's the same for me. And my lack of posts lately prove it. I love phones, and I used to switch phones a lot to try out different features of different flagships, but lately they all seem to be too similar to bother. Nothing out right now gets me excited enough to spend the money on the hobby anymore. We'll see what comes with Pixel 3 I guess. But I have a feeling I won't be taking the plunge this time.

And then within weeks the microphone died, Samsung refused to fix it and I ended up getting rid of mine for an iPhone 4s. Avoided Samsungs myself ever since that huge disappointment. I wanted that phone so badly and I was lumbered with a 2 year contract.

That sucks. I remember now reading the forums and people saying that. I was fortunate, never had any issues. I really liked that phone.

Pretty much exactly where I am. Again, I love this device and pie, just my level of enthusiasm about phone tech overall has dwindled and at this point I'm not sure what could ever revive it to the "good old days" Everything just works and it works great, which is a good thing. So as a result I spend less time on my device which I suppose is the goal but it's bittersweet I guess.

I see what you are saying. On the one hand, it's good that the phone does what you need it to, and does it well, so you spend less time on it; but at the same time, it's sad because you want to spend time on it.

I phone is much better then Android but also expensive

I have both and disagree. They each have their own merits, however if I could choose only one it would be Android. By the way they can both be expensive but Android has a lot more pricing options.

My wife told me that if I don't stop spending so much time on my phone she's gonna leave me.

I'm gonna miss her

For this very reason, I bought a Key2. my pixel 2 XL rocks but I've set it up just like my S7 before it. nothing is new apart from the much better camera. The Key2 is so different to use I find I'm smiling a lot while playing with it.

4 posts, 4 sets of words, all saying the same thing - we are OLD! -
All you young kids, and you're bored? I maxed out on a Note 3, trying every ROM that came out, finally rooting when George came out with Towel Root (after Samsung killed the de La Vega root exploit).

But then I wanted fingerprint protection, so I opted for a Pixel 2. And the first thing I did was root it with Magisk. Now I'm waiting for Xposed 28, so I can run a few Xposed modules. (Magisk Charging Switch is also a great idea to keep from boiling batteries.)

And I haven't finished looking through the list yet.

(Oh, you want old? Try 76. And I regularly talk to people older than I am who play with computers to the point that the computers cry. My desktop is triple-booted - Windows/Linux/Android. Who do you think invented most of this stuff? 20-year-olds? We were posting things like this before the internet was open to the public - both on ARPANet and dialup bulletin boards.)

And the next time something exciting comes out, I'll probably try it too. (Security updates? It;s easier to download the whole factory ROM and flash it without wiping userdata. But no one's come up with an exciting ROM for the P2.)

Well I'm back in this thread to say that the thrill is somewhat back for me. After watching reviews on YouTube I ended up buying a Huawei P20 Pro in the twilight colour. To me it's the only phone of 2018 that really pushes the camera tech and has unique styling (at least with colour).

As my avatar suggests, my favourite phone of all time was the Nokia Lumia 1020. Let's see if Huawei's 40mp camera phone can impress me as much as my Lumia 1020 did. :)

I am bored with phones as well, I think the technology has peaked and the benefit of upgrading every year has disappeared other than having a fresh battery in a new phone. Im looking at the pixel 2 just to have an extra phone. Ive currently have gone through the S9 and the iphone 8...boring, but they do what they do well

Download Amazon Kindle and discover the thrill of reading. There's far more to discover and learn in the world than finding a few new perks in a phone's operating system. :)
Good reply Gary, I love my tech stuff but you can only take it so far. I usually buy a couple of books per month from Amazon and reading them is a great distraction away from trying to find new things to do with my phone.

I was seriously excited about my P2XL and still am all those months later. I was excited when my husband needed a new phone and I got him a P2 XL. I set it up for him and it was almost as exciting as if it were my own phone. i love a new phone.
Did the same for my Missus too Kirstein, it gave me a great buzz

I also download the audible accompaniament and listen while I am reading which can be fun too.

I am going on just a little over a month and this is the best phone to date for me no complaints at all looking forward to the 3xl or the iPhone xs max see how they both look.
