With the portability of the N7 this is a concern of mine. When reading other threads about best apps it mostly just games and reading. What do you recommend or remote wipes and or locators?

Plan B from Lookout or the full Lookout app may suit your needs. I enabled two step authentication recently and if my device is stolen or missing, I could revoke the unique password assigned to my N7 via the web interface for my Google account. It would effectively lock out all the Google services on the device.

As a side note, native remote locking and wiping has been a long needed and oft-requested feature for Android. I'm surprised Google hasn't added it.

Android lost is what I use for my android phones and tablets and its free. Lookout is not both will do the job.

I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that those 'lost my phone' apps don't work.

Yes, the Nexus has GPS. Though this is true, it still needs to send a signal so the tracking website could be notifies of your tablet's location. Unless the thief unlocks your tablet and connects to a WiFi network, I believe you permanently lost it.

I use Seek Droid. Track, remote wipe, etc. I believe its free as well. I think there's at least 5 or 6 apps that are very highly rated that will do what you want.

Must a web connection must be established in order for these to work?

Yes android lost Allows you to send the command while there offline and it will take effect as soon as it connects

Worried more about the remembered information stored on the tablet.

First, go into settings/security and encrypt the device. Then set a good password. If you are not using two factor authentication, stop and set it up now.

The downside to all of this is that your thief will never be able to connect it to wifi so his only option would be a factory reset. Tracking apps would be useless. You'll lose the device but your data will be safe.

Does encrypt mean you have to enter a password every time out use a Google service?

Avast Anti Virus has an anti-theft feature built in - I've tried everything but the wipe it part and it works well
