They Still Haven't Fixed The (Ridiculously) Dim Display...

Have been looking at these on display, and been surprised how much less bright the S4 is compared to the One (and surprisingly, to my aging Galaxy Nexus). And these display models were already set on max brightness. I was using the Play Store main page for comparison. Put them side by side and the difference is huge. I don't see how folks insist theirs are super bright.

Last night with only a 100w bulb litin the room, I blinded my friends with max brightness.
On auto inside it is a drop dim, but easily usable.
Outside on auto, it works great and is more like max brightness.

Due to low reflectivity, the S4 is easier to use in bright sun as compared to the One...could be the gorilla 3 vs 2 on the One.

That really has nothing to do with it. Screen tech takes YEARS to engineer. If they could take the next step, they would. That they haven't indicates costs are still too high.

If you really think the tech consumers use vs. what's actually available (technology wise for the current date) then I guess they have you fooled. Even after Jobs passed away, Apple still had years of his work down the pipeline. I'm not saying it's ready for "mass production", but it's out there. You really think 1080p 5" screen tech is this brand new? I'm sure if the competition wasn't using 1080p, Samsung would of kept it 720p until it was ripe.

No use arguing over it, cause none of this is solid fact. But common sense would see it otherwise.

Maybe try going back and actually reading what I said. You obviously didn't understand it. So let me rephrase it:

Samsung has a lot of money. For them to skip investing in the new equipment must be so expensive that they don't see themselves getting a proper return on investment for quite a while.

Seems to be a common thing around here... +1 on Samsung just not wanting to invest, btw. You know it's out there, but I guess Samsung and their trillions of dollars has a better idea.

Speaking of the Auto setting being too dim, there's a great app, Lux, that takes over the auto-brightness, and give you a lot more control. At least it's been great on my GNex.

That Displaymate article claims the brightness actually goes above 100 on auto, has that been confirmed anywhere? Every time I've seen it, Auto was way too dim to be used. I hope they're right and it is possible to over set the brightness, then one can have hope of a root tool in the future.

You can't do it. The phone ONLY does it in specific circumstances where extra brightness is beneficial.

I have an AT&T 16gig that is bug free, but this. No fine tuning like I've seen. It might be turned off with something I turned on.

Not that I'm aware of. Display mate said that the added brightness is only available to auto brightness and under certain situations.

Activating Auto Brightness on the S4 does indeed provide more than maximum brightness in some situations, e.g. outside in the sun. But it's a rather marginal increase.

I have both devices next to me and it's nothing short of ridiculous stupidity (sry) to say that the S4 is more easily visible due to reflections on the ONE. It's exactly the other way around. And this is not subjective, it's a given fact. LCD > AMOLED on brightness, thus visibility in sunlight. I am not biased, I would love to keep the S4. But it's simply not possible to use it the way you would be able to use the ONE in summer.

I can use the S4 on max brightness/auto brightness in direct sunlight and everything is kind'a visible, but when you compare it to the ONE it's like hell of a difference. I can easily watch a video on the ONE in the brightest possible sunlight with my sunglasses on. I can't even remotely do that on the S4, even if I take the glasses off.

It's working better than the normal auto brightness in terms of regulating brightness. It does not fix the S4's display in bright sunlight

Oh man, thank baby Jesus that you joined just this month to enlighten us all. HINT: Maybe wait more than 6 posts deep to start calling people and their ideas "ridiculous stupidity". Just an idea.

Oh, so in a nutshell: just the number of posts gives validity to my point. That's really funny. I've been on XDA since 2007 and not a total newb.

And stating that the ONE is worse to use outdoors compared to the S4 indicates that the person writing it was either paid for that, was trolling or is plain stupid. And that's got nothing to do with my bad manners or my post count. It's deliberately misinforming other people.

I got no problem with people sayin' the S4 is better because it's white and not silver. Nothing to argue about since it's personal preference.

And here's a pic I took several minutes ago. Very cloudy, under the carport and no direct sunlight to be seen. But I guess that's invalid, because I got only seven posts



MAX Brightness on both of them (yes, in the browser on the S4 as well). Thats still ok for the S4, but far from better. In fact, the difference is even more visible in bright sunlight. Will post a picture of that as well if the weather clears up.

And back to my point: It's plain stupid to say the S4 performs better outdoors, cause the claimed reflections only appear on the S4 and not on the ONE, as my proof and all other reviews out on the net will show you.
