As far as the warranty bit goes - I was a supervisor at a VZW corporate store (great company!) and as far as I remember we went off the ESN activation for warranty issues (IE First customer to activate ESN was the valid warranty owner) with the exception of FRU units (refurbs) which were noted usually.
