Thinking About Rooting...

If you came from firmware 2.20, look in the ruu section of the index on xda, that's what you need I believe. (Although I've never went back to dock, myself)

is it true you dont need to flash the boot.img anymore? someone just said aroma does that during the install?

Viper only does this that I know of. so if you are doing anything other than Viper 3.1, you need to flash the IMG. The easiest way is likely the app setup to do this, where you point it at the same zip file you do for the ROM. Downgrading Hboot still seems like the wisest course though, as it removes this headache forever more.

Heard horror stories about yet another new version of Hboot that if taken via OTA, will make all non-compliant kernels have no touchscreen support. There is only the OTA that is compatible until the kernel source is released, so this is a no-fix situation currently. Do NOT take the OTA when it comes out.

I just use flash image gui app instead of flashing through pc..it's not a hassle at all compared to adb fastboot commands

No, viper will flash it for you...I've never had an issue flashing viper anyways, but some telus one x's have an issue with aroma (extremely rare though)

Not for viper xl , other Roms you can flash with that though..and remember, if for any reason viper doesn't boot, just flash it- this never happened to me, but is a solution I've seen on xda

i am getting the itch; but how do i return to my back if i dislike viper? that is what i need to know in my back pocket before i proceed; thanks guys

I'm running the beta of the next update for ViperXL... i'll let you know when it updates... It is freakin perfect on this build (should be out within a week)

great thanks for the tip; but can i just restore a backup to my stock rooted backup or do i need the boot.img somehow?

That's a little more tricky.. there are a few Roms that are stock with little to no tweaks I would suggest over your current stock rom (and they are more stable too). Once you are rooted, download titanium backup and back up apps only..that way you can restore them to their current state on any rom

As far as restoring your current stock, you just gave to flash the appropriate Ruu (located in the one x index on xda) and flash it... I do believe that will relock your bootloader once you do that- not 100% on that seeing as I've never wanted to go back haha

good point; i guess ill wait for the next version this week or next!

The update might go live today..keep an eye out on that thread

One more question about Viper. Will I have the ability to keep a somewhat stock look? I doesn't have to be exact, I just don't want to feel like Flavor Flav every time I look at my phone! I like things much more subtle. Thanks!

I'm running Viper, and you can definitely set the appearance to be more subdued. :)

I JUST went through the all in one tool kit and got to the last step which was Accepting HTC'S warning. Use volume keys to select, then press power. I did that and my stupid question of the day is.... now what? Is it doing something or do I manually power it back on? Do I unplug it from the computer?

reboot to bootloader... if it says "unlocked" then you're good. Now flash TWRP through the all in one toolkit.

And yes, when you flash viper, it is VERY stock sense looking (if you want stock android, durring the installer, select Senseless)... but you can always mess with what you like in tweaks and personalize
