Hi all,

Am thinking of buying either the kindle fire hd 16gb or the google nexus 7 16gb. However, im stuck for choice. I will mainly use the device for reading literature, as i am a student, but i want the best possible experience of listening to music, playing games, watching videos and browsing the internet etc in my spare time. Of course, to sum this all up, i want to know which device wins the most in all of these categories.

My main question though, is can i read ebooks on the google nexus 7 like i can on a kindle? I had a kindle 6" graphite but sold that on, and have a disc with thousands of ebooks on, so i was wondering if i could put these on the google nexus 7, or only on the new kindle fire hd? I dont know that much about either of the devices, so have little knowledge on this topic. Also, can i buy ebooks elsewhere, like from the kindle library on amazons website and still put them on the google nexus 7?

Hope to hear back from someone with an opinion on which device to buy to suit my needs. I am of course leaning towards the google nexus 7, so just to ask, where would be the cheapest place to buy one anyway? I know carphone warehouse are selling the 16gb version of the nexus for ?158, but was wondering whether there is a catch to this? I can only see the device elsewhere for about ?190ish.

Many Thanks,
Dale Weatherby.

Well, i have been hesitant to get one. Because of all the stuff i have read about it, people having screen lifting off issue or blown speaker. So i am not really sure if you should get one.

I believe the Nexus 7 has a Kindle app in which I'm assuming that's what you'd use to read the books you bought already. Also, if you are tech savvy enough, the Nexus 7 can pretty much do anything you can think of. I actually bit torrented a book for free and figured out a way to read that on my nexus 7.

I know this is biased, however I really think the Nexus 7 is infinitely more flexible/capable than a Kindle Fire. The App Stores don't even compare.

I saw your other post with your concerns. I ordered a Nexus 7 in September and haven't had problems with build quality.

I waited until the kindle fire HD was announced to decide between a Nexus 7 and one of the new Kindles. I went with the Nexus because although the hardware didn't seem as good (screen coating, stereo speakers), the ecosystem and stock Android OS drove my decision towards the Nexus.

I do all my reading on my Nexus and there are a myriad of apps to use such as FBreader, Aldiko, Kindle, Kobo, etc. I also like the flexibility of using full Android as opposed to Amazon's Carousel UI. Finally, the Google integration with all the Google Apps (Gmail, YouTube, Reader, Google Voice, etc) is a big plus over the Kindle.

There is no real comparison between the kindle and N7.

While the basic hardware is essentially the same, the N7 ecosystem is free, wild and mostly wide open - the fire is locked up fairly tight and crippled in many ways.
There is a horde of accessories & hardware improvements available for the N7 and a trickle for Fire. The same for the Apps (software) available for the two.

If you can put up with the hiccups that a more open OS and hardware environment give you, the N7 is the obvious choice.

edit:
As far as being able to transfer your books in, thats not a problem at all. Connect the N7 to a laptop/PC with the cable that comes with and drag n drop the files into the folder named ...\Books and you are all set regardless which of the horde of eReaders available for the N7. I use 4 different ones at the moment until I decide to narrow it down - but I do my serious reading on a little Kindle 3 eInk display - nicer in my opinion for those serious longer sessions so i don't have to worry about battery life. But I watch movies and TV shows, use the N7 instead of a Garmin GPS, play music, surf the web, play games, play with the device etc on the N7. Its a real computer rather than a constrained appliance.

You can use the Kindle app or any of a dozen others - they all have good things and bad but the Kindle reader App on the N7 will certainly make you feel at home.

hi and thanks for all the replies.

i have decided to buy the google nexus 16gb, but am having trouble finding one. i live in the leicestershire area, but my all carphone warehouses are out of stock of the 16gb versions. i dont really want to pay over 160/170 for a 16gb, so does anyone know where i can get one for this price?

i would consider a 32gb, but it must be under ?190.

thanks,

One big advantage to the Kindle when it comes to reading: the Kindle Lending Library (or whatever it's called). You can get the Kindle app for the Nexus 7, but the free lending library is only available on Kindle devices.

Hardware-wise, it's about a wash on pros & cons in my opinion.

But I agree that the Nexus has a BIG advantage in running vanilla android vs the heavily modified android on the Kindle, which is made to essentially force you to buy & do everything via Amazon. I really like Amazon for a lot of things, but I'd hate that limitation.
