Just saw this on Droid life
We tend to get a little skeptical when customer services reps start dropping time lines for updates, but since the Gingerbread (Android 2.3) chatter for the Thunderbolt seems to have died down a notch or two lately, we thought we?d share. From the email below that one of our readers received back from an HTC rep, you can see a reference was made to 2.3 and the fact that it is causing some sort of bug which has prompted them to pull it back?

Dear Shannon xxxxx

I understand how important it is to have the latest update for your device. Unfortunately, it is the latest update to 2.3 that is creating this to happen. HTC has pulled back this update to keep future customers from receiving the update. We are working on getting this update fixed, when the update is relaunched you will receive a notification on your device. Unfortunately, there is no estimated time frame on when this issue will be resolved. Shannon, we do apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. To send a reply to this message or let me know I have successfully answered your question log in to our ContactUs site using your email address and your ticket number 11USCW30ENA002669.

Sincerely,

Samantha

Want to see what others are saying? Have a question to ask other HTC fans?

We had heard that the update to Android 2.3 would be available by the end of Q2 some time ago, but with some unexpected bugs (those pesky reboots) that needed to be addressed immediately, we?re not surprised by this delay. Is it frustrating? Most definitely. But after seeing 3 or 4 different GB builds leak though, you can tell that there is something troubling this update.

She mentioned that there is ?no estimated time frame?, so we?ll just have to try to tell you guys to remain patient. Sorry, folks.

Cheers Shannon!

sucks but GB isn't that special. I've been on and off it for over a month. AOSP and the various HTC builds. It really doesn't add much, I know people will claim better memory management and battery life but I haven't seen any of that on the bolt.

Now that Netflix works for froyo I see no huge advantage aside from a few specific apps that only run GB.

Just be patient and when it comes it comes. Chances are you wont even notice a difference unless it has some sense 2.1/3.0 aspects.

note* This was referring to a factory stock build. Custom roms are taking more advantage of GB so if you really want to see a difference...

I'm sorry for those chopping at the bit but I'm in no hurry to get gb. It's more.important to me that they concentrate on known bugs that can be fixed without major changes. Once gb comes.along I expect another bunch of issues and I don't need the aggravation. Forget gb. Work on known bugs.

I agree. My TB has been rockin since MR2. Now just waiting for LTE in my area. :p

Speaking of bugs; one that has been present since the TB was launched....

When you have two or more calls going (ex. call waiting or three way), you are suppose to be able to select a call and hit "End Call" to end JUST that call. Problem is that is disconnects ALL calls. Albeit any remaining calls will ring you back immediately. But, come on! How hard is it to implement such a feature????

I don't work in the software field so please excuse my ignorance. If the ROM developers are getting leaked versions of great gb and making it work, what is holding up verizon and HTC?

I also agree I rather have a build that works right then end up with what the EVO4g has.

Bugs? What bugs? I have no problems (yet) whatsoever on my CM7 Gingerbread Thunderbolt. :D

Screw that HTC update. Hahahahaha

I think that GB is a lot less noticeable on an HTC Sense device than on other phones. Due to the Sense interface staying about the same. No rush on GB for me.

Since HTC has the "Sense" overlay, they need to build a version of GB that works with their proprietary software in addition to the hardware. Since it often means two of the "same thing" working in tandem, bugs tend to emerge in their software in addition to the bugs that already exist in the Thunderbolt, which is why you're seeing fairly stable community builds (since they strip away the Sense overlay more often than not). Although I have no clue whatsoever what the issue might be, take this email as a sign that the Thunderbolt isn't being forgotten, is being worked on, but internally (at HTC, that is) is having issues. I'd rather have a stable build than a rushed job, wouldn't you?

After the MR1 update, I'll wait for a final product rather than be greedy and demand a broken product.

Frank, correct as always. It really is not all that noticeable. Gingerbread adds some goodies, but in reality, its really not that big of a bump over Froyo, such as the jump from Eclair to Froyo, which was HUMONGO! I made that word up. Deal with it.
