This whole "un-contract" concept

It rather stinks, in my opinion.

T-Mobile apparently is claiming to have lower monthly rates with its new policy of every phone being purchased outright (at the time of check out or over 24 months). Well, I am not a T-Mobile expert, but I looked at its plans and it would cost me the same there for my four lines as it does with Verizon. The only differences are the unlimited data (which I do not use) on the T-Mobile side and the better network on the Verizon side. As well, T-Mobile rates don't go down after or when the phone is fully purchased.

The same holds true for Verizon when you pay full price for the phone. Verizon is not lowering its monthly rates if you buy the phone over 12 months. Verizon is just making more money. They are all just making more money and I sadly think that we are going to have to start looking at our phones like we do our computers, because most people cannot afford to go out and buy new computers every two years.

It is a bait and switch industry. Get everyone hooked on smartphones and then ramp up the prices of everything.
:-$

My husband and I have been with Verizon for over 10 years. We recently switched to TMobile and are saving $80 per month and we get comparable coverage in our area. It's also worth noting if you choose the payment plan on TMobile you can pay off your phone at any time. You are not obligated to pay over the entire two years.

That is a HUGE difference for people who use it. If you don't use it, then stick with Verizon.

T-mobile uncarrier plan would cost me $210 for 5 lines.

On Verizon, taking out $15 per month per line for the subsidy, I would be paying $65 for 5 lines, 2 smartphones including one with unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE, and 3 dumb phones.

$210 on tmo vs $65 on Verizon is a very simple choice for me. Yes, tmo does offer more services than Verizon at that price, but services which I don't use.

Also, factoring in the phone cost, I paid $37 for my note 2, tmo is selling it for $629. If this is the case, then my subsidy would be worth much more, so my cost on Verizon would go down quite a bit more.

Obviously, each person needs to put all the pluses and minuses of each carrier and choose accordingly. Verizon has the best total network coverage and it's 4GLTE network is way larger than tmo. That to me is worth quite a bit.

EDIT: I can't brain today and so couldn't figure out how to delete my comment, which was stupid. Blargh.

It is cheaper.

Check it out.

If you sign up for service under the old terms, a galaxy s 3 was 200 and the monthly 24-month contract for everything including unthrottled faux G data, you'd spend 2,360 total for the device and service together.

Now if you do the new plan, it's 100 upfront, 70 per month for unlimited everything, 20 for 20 months for the phone, which makes it 90 per month. And as before but with one difference, after the phone is paid off to only pay the 70 per month.

2,180 which is cheaper than the contract plan.

Now if you keep your phone longer than 2 years, let's say you keep it 3 years, in contract you would pay 1,080 for that third year, in the new plan that third year is 840

If you were going to fulfill your contract, you're getting a deal.

If you weren't going to fulfill it, you aren't because you have to pay the full price for the phone.

My advice is don't sign a contract if you won't honor it

That price deducts the $15 pretty month subsidy. I actually pay $140 per month for my 5 lines. I just deducted the carrier subsidy to give an equivalent uncarrier plan.

I just don't know where do you, guys, get these miraculous rates. I got four lines: three dumb phones, and a single smartphone with unlimited data and a mobile hotspot. Oh, yes, and unlimited texting. I pay VZW $209 a month. Something is wrong with this picture.

Why are you paying for a mobile hotspot? You can get that free on an android phone even unrooted.

What phone do you have?

Get just the 550 minute family share plan with one line with unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE, and 3 basic phone lines. No other features. Cost would be $110

How do you know what the subsidy is?

Hint b it's more than 15

Uncarrier means you are not stuck. I'm all for separating the phone from the service contract.

It is just my estimate, Verizon doesn't separate the cost of the subsidy, but I think that most can agree that the subsidy is worth at least $15 per month. In the case of my note 2, it was worth around $25.

I would have stayed for something along those lines. I had two smartphones, one with unlimted LTE the other with 2GB, and a third dumbphone. 700 min, unlimted text and it came to $198 a month including taxes. Wasn't worth staying since the data speeds dropped to about 5-8 mbps on LTE, and the coverage in my area is not any better than AT&T or T-Mobile. I get about 1.5 mbps on T-Mobile but for about $45 a month buying refills online is a better deal for me.

HTC Rezound. What? Free hotspot? I've been paying $30/month for it.

You can use apps to use hotspot for free. But some don't work and others will. Legal Disclaimer: It is a most likely a violation of your contract. Unless your on LTE, since Verizon cannot legally throttle you or force you into using a hotspot to share the LTE connection.

I have a 700 minute family plan, using it partially for work. In any case, doesn't seem close to $110. :(
