Thoughts on the Droid from a BB user

I've always had my Gmail contacts synced to my phone going back to the G1. Although I admittedly don't have many-around 160 or so. The contact application is the worst part of the phone because Moto felt they needed to fix a problem that was never broke in the first place. The stock contact application worked just fine for Twitter and Facebook integration, but I digress...

It is nowhere near the point its not usable. but again, I don't have an overwhelming number of contacts either. Its rare that I locate a contact using the phonebook. I usually just use the Chomp SMS quick compose feature if I want to send a SMS, or just hold the menu button to activate the virtual keyboard and just start typing a name.

I switched from an iphone to my droid 1 and then moved on to my droid 2. Best choice that i have ever made.

I have over 460 contacts and my needs are tame compared to others. Yes, 3-4 times a year I clean them out. Retail stores, vendors, office partners and mobile users, etc. It adds up.

I did download and try the trial of Touchdown. The site support is good, emailed them and got one back within 12 hours.

However, there is no way to make it the default mail handler. I know you can move icons around...but if an application asks for email (web link, etc.) it'll open in the default mail handler and there's more confusion for a novice field user right there.
I can tell you Touchdown works with Active Sync/Exchange MUCH faster than the default app.

I have several sub folders of my inbox, as said...for different departments, people, projects, etc.

I have rules that move incoming messages to those folders.

The default mail app would not notify me of a new message if an email was diverted to one of those folders.

However, Touchdown does...so for 19.99 it's a winner of an app.
However...it's more confusing because it can't be the default app.

As said before...it's a great phone. Fast, sexy, etc.
Just not as simple and bulletproof as a BB for a business user.
