Thoughts on the Screen/On/Off Button? (size/easy of press/etc)

I'd like to know your guys' thoughts on whether you feel that the power button on this phone is extremely hard to find/press by simple touch.

When I have no case on the phone, I literally fumble around trying to find the exact spot to press to either turn the screen on or off.

I'd like to know what thoughts or ideas you guys have about making the button more robust. ie: build up a layer of super glue or epoxy on the button so that it sticks out a bit more... or, finding a way to get into the phone and insert a spacer to make the button more prominent.

My biggest gripe is that the Volume button is great.. it sticks out just enough so that it's easily found .. yet, the power button is perfectly flush with the rest of the case.

Also, it'd be great to find out if yours is better than mine.. as then I'd have some hope to resolve this with a simple replacement.

Thanks for any input.

I have the same issue at times. I'll slide my finger along the edge looking for the power button and never seem to find it. And I have to have my finger on it just right to push it. I am getting used to it now though.

The issue I have is sometimes I hit the volume rocker when trying to power off. Meaning, my palm is hitting the volume when I push on the power button. So I end up having to power it on again to readjust the volume.

I have a vzw case on my phone so it allows me to feel the button out much easier. but it makes sense that the power button is recessed so you don't accidentally power the phone off.

the biggest annoyance is that everytime I go to press the button to power off the screen I always end up hitting one of the volume buttons just as NickA was talking about

Maybe the first couple of days I would fumble for it, but the way I have conditioned myself to naturally hold the phone now ensures I am able to press it without messing with the volume rocker. I put my thumb on the top right, pinky in the bottom center, and my index now naturally falls on the power button.
My only complaint, which is completely unreasonable I understand, is that I wish the button were on the other side of the phone, but only because I'm left handed so I naturally hold it in my left hand. I know most people would hold it with their right, so for 90% of the population the button placement makes sense.
But in summation, no, I no longer have a problem hitting the button properly. It's just like the soft keys at the bottom of the phone. You just program their locations into muscle memory and then there's no problem.

I have the "power off confirmation/silent phone/airplane mode" (if you hold down the power button) turned off so my phone doesn't lock and it allows me to turn the screen on with the power button or the volume buttons.

Yes, I think there are differences from one device to the next. I've tested 3 Fascinates now, and the power button was definitely hard to press on one 1 of them vs. the other 2. It also happened to be the one Fascinate where the volume rocker made a noise when I shook the phone slightly.

Thanks guys for your input. I too have a verizon case.. and I do agree that it makes it easier to find the button.

The reason for the question is that I just got the desk dock... so, I'm now attempting to use the phone again without a case..

for now, I'll just try getting used to the location and see if muscle memory will eventually help me out.

Mainly just wanted to see if it was just my phone or if others er experienced similar issue.. thanks for the input.

My biggest design problem is the location of the USB port. I tend to have my phone plugged into my computer a lot when I'm traveling. When someone calls, I then have this huge cord sticking up over the top of my head! If it were on the bottom of the phone, it could hang down and wouldn't bother me at all. Now... I have to unplug the phone every time someone calls. Its annoying.

(I know... get a BT headset and quit my whining!)

The usb port on top is annoying but the most annoying thing is how the on off button is right across from the sound rocker... I can find the key but there's no way to press one without the other.

The power button is not in an easy area to press. I don't mind the usb door but I do wish the usb was on the bottom and the power button on the top.

Ditto big time! I'm either turning my sound off and on or finding the power button. Sucks. Why the hell could they do a top power button?

Although it IS a strange place to put a power button, I never had trouble finding or pressing it, and never pressed the volume button accidentally.

Likewise, the USB port seemed strange on top, and having a sliding door to cover it up was pointless considering I had to put it on the charger at least twice a day.

i wondered why the button was on the side when i first got the phone too.

then i held it and it made perfect sense...holding the phone in your right hand, and your thumb lines up pretty well with the button. holding it in your left hand and your index finger is in easy reach (although with the left hand, i tend to hit the volume rocker, but i don't have the issue in my right hand)

the usb port on top is kind of odd unless you keep the device plugged in and on it's edge, the cable being on top lets the device stay flat on edge (ie, in a cup holder)

the bottom is more comfortable for the times you use the phone and it's plugged in, but i feel both variations are better than the side port that is found on other devices, that always gets in the way when you hold the phone while plugged in, and it also makes the cable jutt out the side which made it so my inc couldn't sit in my cup holder when it was plugged in.

my only real gripe with the power button is that it is kind of hard to push in because it is so flush. but this seems to be a manuf variance. my first fascinate was much easier to push in than my current one.

I find I am slowly developing the muscle memory to grab the phone and hit the power button without gripping too hard on the opposite side. It's a big change from a blackberry where you could mash just about anywhere on the top of the phone and get it to unlock.
