Three stage charging?

So, some apps like battery doctor and clean master have this feature which automatically handles your charging and supposedly makes charging happen in three stages. My question is; does it really? Or is it just a hoax? If not, how does this software actually give these commands to the charger? How does it work behind the scenes?

I have been trying to figure this out too. I understand the USB specs. and how charge current is negotiated. But I can't see how this is remotely possible without root acces. Anyone?

Du battery has 3 stage charging. It is a good app. I have had it for a yr or more. I tried other apps, battery doctor is good too.
