Thumbnails on media card

Was able to transfer pix to and from the TB to PC.
On my Media Card it has the DCIM file and a thumbnail file.

Can I delete the thumbnail file?
What is it for?

You can but you might not want to. The thumbnail file is for displaying the little preview pictures in your gallery. The DCIM folder contains the actual size pictures. In the gallery you click on the thumbnails to display the larger picture.
