Time didn't update on the face for 20 minutes in AOD

Time froze for me today. My watch face didn't update until about 20 minutes later at which time I probably moved the wrist enough to wake it out of always-on screen mode then it updated. I saw this problem yesterday but it only lasted about 2 minutes. I was watching the minute digit and saw my phone time changed but the watch didn't. I'm using the Watch Maker free sweeper face. Is this a problem with the face itself or with android or the watch itself? Does the face app get suspended but whatever is rendered on the screen stays?

I don't know if I should stop using this watch face or stop relying on always-on or what.

I'm guessing it's the face or the app you're using for the watchface. I noticed that too in some custom Faces but not on the stock ones.
