The OP is talking about split A/Cs. That's where you have several separate consoles around the building. They use remote controls for the thermostat and general controls. You're probably thinking in the lines of a central A/C unit.

I got this working with my Apple TV by actually letting the Apple TV learn the HTC's remote codes. It doesn't seem to like the cable box remote codes but the TV ones work fine. Now I don't have to worry about losing that damn tiny Apple remote.
