Hey all.
I'm on T-mobile and noticed that I have an app to carrier unlock my phone. Anytime I attempt to permanently unlock the phone the app directs me to call T-mobile.

Yesterday I called them to unlock the phone and they said they could only do it temporarily (30 days) .

What's up with that? I paid full price for this phone. Anyone know the reasoning behind not allowing me to unlock it?

It not like I need to unlock it (I'm a happy T-mobile customer) I just want to.

Thanks.

You have to call them to get the phone approved for a full unlock -- then the app will perform that unlock. They usually say the phone has to be on their network for a certain amount of days (I think 45) then they will perform a full unlock.

I usually just do the live chat and request the unlock -- I have received approval even when I wasn't at the 45 days by doing that method.

Seems like a case of "you bought the device but it's not quite yours". As much as I like Tmobile this rubs me the wrong way.

Only 96% happy now.

Tell them that you are going out of the country for 3 months and you want this unlocked so you can use it as a prepaid wherever you're going to.

My experience has been that you have to wait until the buyer's remorse period is over before you can request a SIM unlock, which seems fair to me. I've always done the request on the 15th day and had no problems.
