To do list before a factory reset?

Giving some serious consideration to doing a factory reset on the instructions of HTC for a problem some of us (myself included) have been experiencing.

What steps should I take before I do it to get my data back up and running as fast as possible?

Am I correct in thinking that i can just go to the Market, hit the download button and see all the apps i've downloaded in order to reinstall them?

Will doing the reset affect the data on my SD card?

Is there a good all-around backup program that does not require root?

First – Download AppBrain from the Market and set up an AppBrain account, then Sync your phone to Appbrain. AppBrain makes re-installing all your apps way easier then the market.

You can make a back up of your contacts by going to People -> Menu -> Import/Export and Export your contacts to the SD Card as a backup to G-mail’s OTA Contacts.

Use File Manager, from the market, to copy/move your pictures, music and documents to your SD Card.

No way to save SMS’s that I’m aware of.

You may also want to write down what you have on each screen as well. That took the longest for me, remembering what went where, even though I look at it every day!

After that, you should be good to go. When I did a reset it took me about 45 min to get everything back.

Sweet thanks! Good tip about writing down what goes where. I must have spent hours with the old Storm trying to figure out what goes where after installing every leak that came down the pike...and there were a lot.

One more quick one...was giving serious consideration to rooting so i could get rid of the crap verizon stuck in there with froyo, should i do the reset first, then root, or other way around? I would think reset first and start clean.

+1 for AppBrain. Great program.

I've never had to factory reset my phone after I rooted it, so I personally would recommend doing the factory reset first then rooting.

I agree with ucluglee. I don't think it matters, but rooting after would be a good strategy.

Ok, last question before i reset...since everytime i delete something on my calendar it reflects the change on my google calendar that i would access on my computer. If I reset and torch all my settings, it won't erase all my calendar entries will it? I've already backed up my contacts to my SD card and put what few pics and vids i had not on the sd card onto my computer.

It shouldn't delete Google Calendar. Since the reset will knock your account off the phone, when you log in again it should pull down automatically like google contacts. Also the reset does not delete your SD card.

Also, get DropBox, backup any sideloaded apk's or any other random files you may want to save there (e.g. Swype?) so that you can easily retrieve them later.
