to many notifications at once

I am really sorry that I have to ask this... but really appreciate the help! I'm still learning my Samsung Galaxy S3-
I got a little app crazy and ended up with more than one sms, mms app running at the same time, causing several notifications also at the same time. I ended up just doing a factory reset on the phone and am starting all over. I enjoy the different themes, love trying new things, but don't want to mess it up again. I would love some advice on how to make sure this doesn't happen again.

if you use a third party app to replace a stock app you need to disable the notification of the stock app, So for instance you download Handcent SMS, you will need to go into the stock messaging app, and from the messages list hit the menu button>settings>scroll down to notifications settings area> uncheck the box next to notifications. this will disable the stock notifications and you will only recieve notifications from Handcent. Hope this helps

Or even better... disable the actual app itself.
So using the example above, if you want to use another sms app then disable the stock sms app, otherwise your phone is going to be doing double the work.

On Go Sms you can safely disable the stock app its in settings but im not sure about the others.
