Ok, I made a bonehead move...

I accepted today's OTA update on my rooted fascinate and 2 things are now happening:

1) I keep getting the prompt to run the update over and over again, even though it says my firmware has the update.

2) Apps are no longer gaining root access through SuperUser. (Root Explorer keeps prompting me to restart, to no avail; wireless tether keeps telling me to try again...)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW I'm on a Mac.

no. i just renamed them. but i did not change them back to their original names before i ran the update.

actually it sounds like it may have updated successfully but I'm reading reports that it removes root.

me either i just updated as is, french may be right because i new mine came up with a prompt indicating that it wasnt rooted anymore.. so i just re did it

1. Kill the update task (forget the name infopath or something like that).

2. you need to root your phone again. After the update you lose your root access.

If you have clockworkmod installed there is a signed update.zip over on Xda you can install and it keeps root and works perfectly

quick question..

i had my phone rooted...renamed the bloatware to apk.old, then changed all back to normal. I ran the OTA and my phone updated fine. I still have superuser in my apps. Am i still rooted?

thanks

Not necessarily. Try opening an app that requires root access. Titanium backup or root explorer for instance. If it opens without complaining to you about root access, then you still have root. If it pops up saying it requires root access and can't get it, then you don't. It is possible to still have the superuser app installed without having root.

I'm actually in the same boat as the OP. installed the unsigned zip posted here on the forums and lost root. tried following the instructions to push the su file back onto the device to no avail. At a loss now. Clock work backup that I made hangs now (yes I did confirm that it worked when I first made the backup).

I'm a noob to the android world and probably should have waited on the update. Regardless, I'm thinking about doing an odin restore at this point.

Any suggestions for the OP and I?

OMG of all the stupid things...

After this update in order for apps to be able to run with superuser privileges you need to:

adb shell (you should have the # prompt, if not su)

cd /system/xbin (or /system/bin if your files are there)
chmod 4755 su
chmod 4755 busybox

exit

I had to do this in order for apps to be able to run as root. Two hours of my life I'll never get back figuring this out...

BIG thanks to Martian on this :D Thought I'd post it here so more people will get this fix. Solved my problem.

You can also download and install the SU app from ROM manager and it will re-root you just fine.

It does for me. There are no available roms to download only superuser ef and cd. Every time I try to reboot into recovery also is denies it but yeah.. it kind of works. Running Clockwork via RM.
