just got the nexus 5 a week ago and i am pleased with it..BUT..

Why does it throttle too much?

it can throttle down to 1.19Ghz (from the default 2.27Ghz/stock kernel) in most 3D games

whats the point of having a powerful CPU if its going to throttle WAY DOWN when the going gets a little tough??

is there a way around this?

yes its throttling while gaming only and its clearly effecting the performance..is the GPU taking a nosedive too?

It may also be throttling down due to intensive CPU usage, in order to keep it over heating. You could run an app to see what CPU and Battery temps are at this time.

i already use CPU-Z for that..just today the CPU throttled down a full 1Ghz after just 15min of RIPTIDE GP2

these temps where as follow

But yesterday..the CPU was down to 1.19Ghz after the Cores and Battery hit 52C and 39C respectively

Please note that this throttling didn't have much impact on a relatively old game like GP2 but it butchered my FPS in Angry Birds Transformers

any suggestion? solution?

I tried ElementalX Custom Kernel, not only it allows you to overclock, the throttling can be customized and the time the CPU kicks at full gear.

Nexus 5 | LG D821/Android 5.0.1 with ElementalX 2.10 | SmartBro PH

So its normal for my N5 to throttle all the way down to 1.19Ghz after 15 min of relatively demanding game like Riptide GP2?
