Torn between HTC 10 and LG G5

I had every intention on getting the htc 10 but I ended up getting a great deal on the g5. Needless to say I love the g5 I am getting amazing battery life and the phone never lags. Don't get me wrong there have been a few times where the htc 10 has me tempted but then I look at my g5 and realize that there is absolutely nothing wrong with this phone.

This is true. I guess I was under the assumption that it would take HTC less time to update their skin because it's more minimal and I thought HTC was known for faster updates. And yes, I am in the states. For those with the G5 how bad is the bloatware? And for those with the HTC have you had any camera issues after the update?

I love the fingerprint scanner on the HTC 10. I love that no click is required, but even more, that it is so accurate and sensitive. I think it is far more accurate than the Samsung fingerprint scanner. I have the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 and I get a lot of misreads on that Samsung scanner. This is one of the reasons i chose HTC over Samsung and LG. The other deal breaker with LG is this module"feature". I have zero interest in fooling around with modules. I don't want to have to remember to bring some component to get full use of my phone. Early reviews of LG's software also left me less than impressed.

My personal experience here maybe it will help in your decision. I looked at the G5 when it came out and thought it was a very nice phone. The feel of it in hand was just not that great to me. To be touted as the first metal build LG G series and it still some how felt plastic. This was before I watched all the vids about paint and yada yada. The phone was fast and fluid so no issues there. I was always in love with the HTC M7 and decided to hold off until I could get my hands on the 10. For me I'm very glad I did. I went to the store on release day and ended up walking out with one. For me the build quality was a big deal. No gimmicks like removable this and that. The camera to me does a great job and I love stock Android. It's not a Nexus but the add ons are much like what Moto has been doing. Solid build quality, fast snappy stock like android, great camera are what swayed my decision. Not too happy with the fact I'm on Verizon and already on old software but otherwise at least I know I have something to look forward to when it is released to love my phone all over again.

Yep still a little torn over which one to get. My phones goes in a case so not too bothered about looks... LG g5 does look much snappier to be honest from what I've seen but I think it's splitting hairs. HTC have great reputation for software... I'm tempted by the g5 but the build quality fears will probably make me go to HTC just to be on the safe side (even though I'm sure HTC has a fair share of their own)...

Battery life is a little concern though.. My HTC m8 lasted 18months before battery issues made it a hassle to use. At least the LG can be swapped out.... However the htc10 has had largely positive reviews whilst the LG g5 has mixed reviews... first world problems lol

I've had both the LG G5 (titan) and the HTC 10 (gold), both UK versions and both unlocked. I think all the points above are really well made and valid, i can personally break it down to two simple opinions:

If you prefer a good camera and battery life go for the LG G5
If you prefer a premium build, feel and are an audiophile go for the HTC 10

If you are a neutral, go for the HTC 10

I had the G5 first and loved it from an interaction perspective but couldn't get over the lackluster build and less than premium 'feel'. As such i switched to the HTC 10 and whilst i do miss the wide angled camera and may miss the option to swap the battery in the future i don't regret the change overall.

You say the battery is better, noticeably better or marginally?

I had the g5 for like Two days before taking it back once. I do not think the battery life is better on the G5 than the Htc 10.

This is just a small glimpse of my battery on the g5.watched a game of thrones and fiddled with it and lost only a few percent. Brightness was on auto and this was over LTE.

I think I'm leaning more toward the G5 now. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I actually dig the looks of it. I've heard the camera update for HTC can be slow depending on your carrier.

The build quality of the LGG5 is horrendous.

I do agree this is true in some cases. HTC's is much more of sure thing with build quality. But I guess another pitting me against the htc is the button locations. Seems like they're located so low on the phone, making them not as easy to use, as where the g5's digital "buttons" are.

......on the bad units. There's plenty of good units out there. LG has quality control issues. This has been established.

Just give a good look before purchase. It's a great phone.

I'll say the build quality of my G5 is pretty good. I was very worried when I got it and took it out of the box and everything is the way it should be. So yeah some units are terrible and some units are just fine. I think I like the G5 camera better but admittedly only played with the 10 for a little bit.

Hey hope I can help you some! I've had both the LG G5 and HTC 10 and I can give you my thoughts! :)

I got the G5 when it was available for preorder. All the stores and stuff about the build quality erked me a alot. Made me nervouse. Then my phone arrived. It was completely fine :) No gap. No imperfections. All was good :) I had silver. I liked it alot :) Very fast and fluid and loads apps very fast. The camera was amazing. I kinda thought the wide angle camera was a gimmick...untill i used it. Man I miss it so much. Every smartphone needs to have this. You dont realize how nice and convenient it is till its gone. Also a fact, the T-Mobile Variant has root now. Okay back on to my opinion. The buttons were very sturdy. I though build quality was very good. It doesnt feel like metal but I think metal is over rated especially if your one to use cases. You never really feel it and plastic doesnt give you the bending problems like metal does Cough* 6P Cough*.

On to the modules. Please do not get this phone for the modules. Only look at the modules as a means for swap-able battery and that's it. With only 2 modules out and probly the only ones ever to be out not to mention only 1 in the USA. I was interested in the cam plus but there seems to be issues with it. Make sure u buy it from your carrier as the network bands are in the bottom and might say incompatible if u buy the wrong one. Also Ive seen reports over it not charging the phone when attached. This might just be a defect not sure.

Also theres new reports that LG did usb type c the right way in that it supports qualcomm quick charge 3.0 and USB power delivery. So its all up to specification unlike the HTC 10 which doesnt support Power delivery. The phone does get warm. finger print scanner is one of the best. Works just like the HTC 10 and 6P.

The screen is good not amazing. Its not amoled. But a very good LCD. The HTC 10 lcd is a little better. The G5s screen isnt bad though its very good just not the top LCD panel. No adoptable storage on the G5 unlike the HTC 10 but I dont really like adoptable anyway since it encrypts your storage and is only readable on that phone. So if you pop it out and put it in ur computer it cant read it.

Now on to the HTC 10. Let me just say this. This beast is Rock Solid. I've never felt a phone more solid than this. Its metal and you can tell. The screen is very very good. Amoled like. Both the G5 and HTC 10 have good screens but the 10's is better. A little brighter too. Buttons very very sturdy. Fingerprint scanner is very good, its had some misses lately but might just be a fluke.

The speakers....I don't think there anything special. Yeah there's two but there just not super loud. The G5 has very great speakers for only having 1. Id say the G5s is a little better actually. Speaking of headphone sound though the HTC 10s is one of the best hands down. Phone does get warmer than the G5 though at least to me. Very very snappy. No lag, not that there was on the G5. Battery life is averaging me 4hrs sot almost same as the G5. Maybe better by 30-40 minutes but the G5 does have the swappable battery so you decide what you'd rather have.

The 10's camera to me was lukewarm. I know its capable of more but the processing and software just isnt there all the way. And I think they cheaped out on the coating on the camera cover because I've never had problems with lens flare like I do on this phone and cleaning it. Just seems like there's no oleo-phobic coating(sp?) like on other cameras. I've never had to clean or wipe it off as much as this. It really drives me crazy. The camera seems to not have the best dynamic range. Exposure is also wonky unless you use pro mode(manual controls). Tap to focus does not adjust exposure like other cameras. It also does not do spot metering, exposure just adjusts the whole shot or frame. I don't like this. Also exposure on the front facing cam doesn't adjust to your face very good in a dark room (it adjusts to the background a lot). OIS seems to do a little bit better of a job on the 10 over the G5.

I will say this i will take the G5s cams any day over the 10's no matter if there are updates to the 10's software. Its just better on the G5. Focusing on the 10 seems to mess up alot or be wonky or just slow compared to the G5.

Also, if your buying the HTC 10 Unlocked from htc.com you will get updates very fast. If not you will get them the same speed as the G5 since the 10s and G5s from carriers will be slower since the carriers have to modify and approve them also.

I returned my G5 2 weeks after because things just bugged me and I like to change phones alot and I was in the return policy but Im returning my HTC 10 this week and rebuying the G5. The 10 just doesnt wow me. All it seems to have going for it is build and stock feel. Ill take the G5s cameras over the 10 anyday. Hope this helps. I know its a long read but this is my Honest Opinion.

The comment was to do with current and future battery life, from day zero the G5 is marginally better than the HTC 10, but, the main reason for the comment is the replaceable nature of the battery should you need to go on a long trip or when the current battery starts to deteriorate.

Go spend some time holding and playing with the G5, then make your decision. I bought the HTC 10 (which I'm very happy with), but maybe you'll like the G5.

Great review. Thank you. Can you comment at all on the G5's headphone quality? Is it still good even though it's not HTC good? The HTC has the build quality for sure, but from what I can tell, that's one of it's only "stand out" features (IMO)... which is why I'm leaning toward the G5

My exact sentiments about both these devices. I shared my experience on the HTC 10 forum and was torn to bits. I purchased and returned 2 LG G5 because everytime I would return it I would miss things from it that the phone I exchanged it for didn't have. Didn't know what it was. Then I purchased the HTC 10, had all the problems you encountered with the lackluster camera, bad battery life that cant be swapped, etc and reverted back to purchasing a 3rd G5, this time for good. I understand build quality isn't the greatest, but it makes up for it with all the added features, great camera, swappable battery, excellent fingerprint reader and button placement. Will be my go to device till the Note 6.
