touch screen not responding/no service?

My phone was working beautifully until earlier last night, when I was in the car. I plugged my phone in and used the Winamp app to play some mp3s, and then when I switched songs, the phone froze. I had used the app about 3 nights in a row with no problems (switching songs and all) so this seemed rather random. The phone restarted on its own, then on the main screen, it would not respond when I tried to unlock it. I saw all the apps load (my background didn't) and it also said it had no service. I tried taking out the battery, deleting the cache, restarting it at least a dozen times, and it still doesn't respond. It seems that it does start up, but the touch screen doesn't do anything. It WILL let me answer a phone call by touch wne I get a call, but other than that, it does not respond at all. This has never happened before, so its rather annoying. Do I have to do a factory reset or what?

Yes, try a factory reset to see if that fixes the problem.

I did a factory reset and it fixed the problem, but I was hoping to avoid doing that since I'd have to redownload all my apps and lose all my contacts. I wish I knew what caused it to freak out like that so I can avoid recreating that problem. Would be a major pain in the ass if it happened again.
