Touchscreen damaged, phone pattern-locked. Now what?

My phone screen chipped on the edge. Now it's unresponsive to touch along a horizontal line where the chipping occurred. I had a simple pattern lock, not for security but to avoid accidentally calling people etc. I can begin but not finish the pattern, since my finger has to slide along the damaged area of the screen to complete the pattern. Without unlocking the phone, I can't even download files from the phone.

At the very least, I wish I could back up some data from the phone, without replacing the whole screen. I can enter recovery mode but not sure how that's useful. Never set up a BIOS password. Haven't had any problems beside the chipped screen.

Didn't make a Samsung account, unfortunately.

I see the functionality of "find my device" is considerably greater than helping you find your device, with many remote control features.

If only I could get the screen to rotate 90 degrees into horizontal mode at the pattern, then I could swipe and unlock. But the screen is locked in vertical mode until I unlock the pattern, which I can't do in vertical mode.

anyway, hold power down until unit shuts off,
press and hold volume up and power together until it boots fastboot,
if you have drivers installed adb should work
