I know on Big Red it's 15 days after your upgrade is delivered. If I remember correctly from last year, Google's terms were similar.

If you keep your old phone you don't get the allowance

YOu dont have to send it back until after the new phone arrives... I would wait a few days, but not too long.

Make sure you insure your phone and get a tracking number.
