Well, this has come of a bit of a surprise and also disappointment. I was considering trading in my 2014 Moto X Pure Edition for the 2015 model. Moto's website has a section to determine trade-in values and says you can get up ~$425 on a trade-in. So, I plugged in my model number, said that it powers up and the screen is in good condition and was given a trade-in value of $35. Just for the hell of it, I calculated the trade-in value for an iPhone 6 64GB. It came back as $330! This is a huge bummer. I was not expecting the 2014 Moto X to be worth $300. However, $35?! Really??? What is Moto thinking here? I paid quite a bit for the Moto X when it came out and I am surprised to see how poorly it held its value. Makes me wonder about future purchases with Moto.

Have you ever done a trade-in before? They are almost always like this -- if you check Gazelle, you'll get a similar value, probably. Apple devices always have higher trade in values than everything else. Motorola is probably using someone like Gazelle to handle the trade-ins anyways -- Amazon even uses a third party company to handle at least some of their trade-in program, too.

If you want the most money for your non-Apple phone, sell it yourself rather than trade it in. A 2014 Moto X PE is likely worth a lot more than $35 on Swappa or eBay or just about anywhere you can sell a phone. A month or two ago, 32GB 2014 PEs were selling for $300-ish on eBay in excellent condition. Since I sell a lot there already, I personally sell my devices on eBay and usually get a decent amount for them, even if they are a year or more old.

Hi. Thanks for your response and no, I have not done a trade-in before. So, perhaps I was being a bit naive about the value. Still, I am surprised at how drastic the drop in value is. I would have thought Motorola would have given a better deal to customers who paid full price for these phones. Live and learn!

zerospace-net is right - don't trade it in. You're better off keeping it as a spare or selling it yourself. And yes - iPhones do seem to hold their value longer than Android. I've seen some really stupid prices out there for an iPhone 5 on ebay. To each their own I guess.

Someone else had recommended Swappa.com to sell their phone. I went on their web site and sold my 2014 phone within 4 hours of listing it. The sell is all done through paypal so had my money by next day and shipped the phone. You might check them out.

I can recommend Swappa and Ebay.

Ebay:
Pros: Once you have a profile built up you can get a 24 hour auction for a quick sale
Ebay gets more traffic than Swappa
If you time your auction correctly, you can usually fetch a marginally higher price
You can charge separately for shipping
Cons: 10% sales fee
You occasionally come across fake buyers. They win the auction and then disappear. I always require payment within 24 hours to mitigate this
problem.

Swappa:
Pros: $10 flat sales fee
Fewer fake buyers/scam artists
Responsive customer service
Cons: You usually will have to wait much longer to obtain the same sales price as Ebay
Shipping charge comes out of sales price

For me the decision on whether to sell on swappa or Ebay comes down to the sales price. Assuming shipping costs $10 the break even point is about $200. On Swappa a sales price of $200 nets you $180 after you pay the $10 fee and $10 for shipping. On Ebay a $200 sales price costs you a $20 commission so the net is $180. (remember the shipping was charged separately.)

Compare this to a $500 sales price. On swappa this nets you $480, while Ebay nets $450! Big difference. So if I am selling something for over $200 I generally will try Swappa first. Under $200, I go to Ebay first for the quicker sale.
