Travel to Japan

Anyone have any insight on using your phone in Japan? Can I just buy a local sim? Should I purchase a plan from VZW (not Good price wise) I have the Droid Z force. I am planning a trip in Jan or March.

No the VZW plan is not good pricewise, but it will work and allow you operate with your usual phone number. I like Project Fi for international service, but that would require a different handset. I did not use a local SIM while in Japan. I rented a MiFi from Xcom Global and did my text messaging over Google Voice and WhatsApp. Of your options, I like using VZW and staying on WiFi as much as possible if only for the convenience factor (especially if it's a shorter trip). If you're going for more than a week, try a prepaid local SIM. You should be able to find them at all the major train stations.
