According to this website, I need the following:
Your device must support W-CDMA Band 1 (2100MHz) or Band 6 (800MHz)
Your device must be SIM Lock Free.
I think the Galaxy S4 GE meets the second edition but from what I could tell, the first condition I do not meet. Can anyone confirm this? I'm a bit suspicious because in the phone itself, I've seen CDMA settings but I'm not sure if it's correct (see Notification Toggle).

I'm using Wikipedia as source.

Does anyone have recommendations for SIM card rental for traveling to Japan?

From the Google Play store:

Network
Unlocked GSM/UMTS/HSPA+/LTE
GSM/EDGE/GPRS (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)
3G (850, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz)
4G LTE (700, 850, AWS, 1900 MHz)

WCDMA is a 3G GSM technology, not to be confused with CDMA, which is used by VZW and Sprint in the US. Bottom line, the Google Play Edition S4 supports WCDMA in the 2100 band.

That is good news...I'll do some more research but it looks like I'm in luck. Thanks!

I've got the SIM and inputted the required apn but I'm unable to connect to their network. Using "notification toggle" I've tried to switch radio band but it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas?

Maybe I need to unlock the SIM?
EDIT: To clarify when I tried to set the radio band, there was nothing for me to select.

No I was not able to get it with the SIM card but T-Mobile at the end had free international data which is what I used.
