Question trouble transferring data from old to new

trying to transfer data from a moto z play to a moto z2 play and having issues. when i try to copy from phone to phone, i place them back to back, get the tone, but the z play gets stuck on this screen

and following these instruction, the z play searches but cant find the z2

tried via the cloud, but either it didnt work, or im doing something wrong, because none of the apps, photos, messaging and phone data gets transferred. very frustrated. have googled this to death with no luck. any help would be appreciated

bump for help. there has to be a solution for this. the last thing i want to have to do is call motorola support but im running out of things to try. i just recently transferred date between 2 moto z play phones and it worked flawlessly.

Is the Z2 Play freshly factory reset, and you're trying to transfer the data as part of the setup wizard?

Are you able to connect the two phones via USB and have them recognize each other?

You're trying to transfer data from an 8 year old phone to a 7 year old phone, so there's always the possibility of faulty hardware, or perhaps some out-of-date Android feature that is no longer supported

yes, z2 is factory set. i dont get the option to use cable on the z2 display. yes the phones are 7 and 8 years old respectively, but both were purchased recently brand new out of the box

It would be unusual for a phone that old to be truly brand new. Are you certain it wasn't used or refurb'd? It's very easy for a seller to pack up a phone and vacuum seal it with plastic wrap to make it look brand new.

If you haven't already done so, try setting up each phone separately, and then see if there are any system updates available. If so, let the phones update, and then see if you can transfer data afterwards. (You might have to factory reset the target phone first -- this would not roll back any system updates, though.)
