Troubles with the fingerprint scan?

I've been trying to get my phone to register my fingerprint and I'm not sure on the technique. Do I press the home button down during the process or just rest my finger on it for a few seconds? The only time I can ever get the circle up with the 0-100% is if I put my thumb sideways and eventually it recognizes some of it but I've never been able to get it past 30%.

I'm not sure if the scanner is just the home button or is it also around it? I've kept the factory screen protector on it so I'm not sure if that might be bothering the scan

You need to take the factory screen protector off. That affected the scan significantly when setting up my S7.

You can cut the portion of the protector over the home button, if you wish to keep the factory protector
