Trying to add microsoft outlook account to my android phone

I cannot add a Microsoft outlook account on my android LG G3 phone under settings/accounts/add account. This all started within the last couple of days when my onenote was not syncing with onedrive. I uninstalled onenote and reinstalled. OneNote for Android seems to have installed OK. However, when I try to sign-in with my outlook.com account on OneNote, it just doesn't connect. Then I noticed my outlook.com account is now missing from the account listing. So I tried to once again add my outlook.com account under settings but it doesn't connect as well.
