Trying to determine if USB port on Epic 4G is bad.

I have a Windows 7 64-bit laptop with the Epic 4G USB drivers installed. It has worked fine in the past, but now when I plug the phone in, I can still see it as mass storage, but the OS does is not recognizing the phone.

I have a second Epic 4G in my household, which works fine on the same computer using the same port and cable (recognized in Windows). USB debugging is off on both phones.

Is this a sign that the port on the phone is bad? Has anyone seen this before?

Very possible. You may want to refer to this thread now before something really goes south and you can't get back into your sdcard again or will have to use a sdcard reader to put these files on it.

Its a new thread at XDA that will allow you to roll back to EC05 stock form without using Odin in case your USB does take a dump. This way you can turn in your phone at Sprint for a replacement without the worries of it being rooted and running custom ROMs.

Awesome, thanks very much for the link.

One question: Can I use a Nandroid backup I made from one phone to restore on a different phone (as long as it's the same rom/kernel/modem, etc.)?

I would say yes as long as everything is identical ROM/kernel/modem. I personally wouldn't do it but it should work.

This just happened to me too. I had to ReRFS and restore the Samsung Recovery. Still nothing, Sprint replaced the device. When you get your new one, Load EC05, Load your Rom, then do your nandroid restore. Everything worked fine for me.

Well it accomplished what it was supposed to do then correct? It removed any sign of you being rooted and running custom ROMs without the use of Odin and you were able to get your device exchanged without worry or issue.

That is what that link I provided was intended for. :)

Oh Absolutely. Didn't mean to discredit it. It's a great step for 2 reasons. If you return to stock and it solves your USB problem, then there might be some ROM wackiness. If not, you'll have to do it before you go return the phone to Sprint for replacement anyway.

Good deal. I posted that link because I found it the other day being a new thread on XDA and its a excellent idea. Over time most will go threw a failed USB port especially if your on and off the cable doing file transfers, etc.. So its a great option if your stuck holding the ball and rooted and can't use Odin. Now your worries are over and you can goto Sprint with a stock phone in hand and get it replaced without having to come up with a story or purposely breaking your phone (as some have done) to make it "unresponsive" to hide the fact they were rooted to get it replaced.

Yeah, worked perfectly for that. Just make sure you use both the reRFS and the Samsung Recovery. If you just use ReRFS, the sprint techs may discover CWM2.5 and make you jump through another hoop.
