Trying to factory reset/download mode my Samsung GS3 but screen goes black after loading?

Today my phone suddenly stopped working today, at first it would restart when the lock button was touched. This happened once today, so I turned it back on and it stayed on for about 5-10 minutes before shutting off completely. I've taken out the battery multiple times, and I've gotten it to boot up to the "Samsung Galaxy SIII" screen before it goes black. I researched my problem and learned that I could possibly solve it by factory resetting or putting my phone into download mode. But if I get either to load, the factory reset screen does not show up, and when put into download mode, the screen goes black after it reaches the "Downloading..." screen. Is there anything I can do or am I just going to have to give in and get a new phone?

Welcome to the forums.
You can try to reboot into recovery. There you can do a cache wipe or even a factory reset.

Are you sure that the battery is well charged?

With the phone completely off connect the charger. Do you see a charging graphic showing the current charge level? Does the battery appear to be charging normally?

Perhaps your battery is shot - can you borrow one from someone else?

Could someone help me? I accidentally put my phone into download mode, and suddenly it says somethin about "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again." Can someone tell me how to completely reset my phone when it's in this state?
