I've found a lot of old threads about getting it to work on the Epic but I've tried WIFI tether (several different versions) all of them download and install properly just get "stuck" in the starting screen. I believe it was pre7 that my Windows 7 laptop could see the signal but would not connect. I'd like to be able to connect both my ipad and laptop. I've also tried barnacle and can't get that to go past the "starting" screen either. Can anyone offer me any advice? I'm totally new to the whole rooting process and although I've read a lot, not sure I'm ready to flash a kernal yet. I just used the one click root method for EC05. Any help or suggestions is MUCH appreciated.

You are answering YES to the prompt when it asks for root level access correct? Check your Superuser application and make sure you have granted access for Wireless tethering.

Make sure you're rooted; it sounds like the program may be hanging when asking for root permissions. The way I always check if root worked is install Titanium Backup from the market and start it. That program requires root permissions to operate so you should be asked for permissions for it. If you don't get a prompt, your root may have been lost.

I have read in multiple places (and can confirm its true) that if you're running Wifi Tether v3, you should disable 4G prior to turning on Tethering. Once its on, you can then turn on 4G again. If you're using Wireless Tether v2, you don't need to do this but it only creates an AdHoc network.

Wireless Tether v3 is called 'Wifi Tether' in the App Drawer and has a yellow icon.
Wireless Tether v2 is called 'Wireless Tether' in the App Drawer and has a green icon.

I am running Wireless Tether v3.0-pre14 on my Epic (and my wife's) and don't have any problems as long as I remember to turn off 4G before turning Wireless Tether on. I have never had problems turning Wireless Tethering OFF with 4G on.

I'm also reading up on rooting so I can wireless tether my iPad. It sounds like you need more than root though. You also need "Netfilter-enabled kernel", correct???

This application requires a "rooted"-device and a (custom-) kernel which supports netfilter (iptables)!
** PREREQUISITE **
1) Root
2) Netfilter-enabled kernel
