Trying to load Rocket Music from a .apk file

Trying to load rocket music player for use on Android Auto. If I load the ad filled one from Google Play, it opens in Android Auto. I also have a .apk file for a premium/no-ad copy. If I load this one, it opens & plays fine on the phone, but Android Auto doesn't see it. How can I get Android Auto to recognize this no-ad install?
