Trying to love the G5 but can't.

I saw G5 has actually has app drawer in the setting option (default is off). I think it was android authority.

Would you say that my home screen is bloated and distracting? All my apps are there. All within folders.

My frequent apps are represented by the folder icon and less frequent apps are grouped with similar apps.

In any case, I'll never understand why anyone ever uses a stock launcher. They're terrible compared to anything available in the Play Store.

Im assuming most if not all of your icons are folders, that would absolutely drive me nuts. I wants apps on my home screen to be an immediate link to opening said app. If I have to take an extra step to open a folder, then pick my app its an added an unnecessary step in my eyes.

My 3 home screens have only 3 folders: Family direct dials, work direct dials, and all my angry birds games 😄

If I press the maps button, maps will open, I dont need to sift through folders and sub folders to find what I want.

Everything else on my homescreens is apps I use daily. My app drawer has almost 100 apps, thats a lot of folders I would now be required to have cluttering up my homescreens.

I inderstand using folders and sub folders work for people, I understand some people put EVERY app on their home screens. The selling point of Android over apple is I have the choice and ability to lay it out how I prefer and so can someone else who likes it different. Removing the app drawer removes my choice (sans a 3rd party launcher, which outside the tech savvy user, is unknown to them)

So you take an extra step, open an app drawer, and scroll to the page where the app is.

And I don't have to sift through folders to find what app I'm looking for. For my most used apps, it one touch. For anything else, at most it's one swipe, one tap to open the folder, one tap to open the app. That's a lot quicker than tapping to open an app drawer, then scrolling to the page that has the app you're looking for.

That's all besides the point. The point is, with a little cleverness, you can make any set up work for you and make it work well.

But forget all that. People are complaining FAR too much about the lack of an app drawer when they have a solution right in front of them: third party launcher. The only people who will complain are those who are well aware of the existence of an app drawer. So many people just use their phones exactly how it came out of the box.

The problem with third party launcher, is you lose the knock code ability on any empty place on the screen. I know you can still knock on the task bar, but that is not as nice. I have used Nova and know that you can map a button to it, but I still miss tapping on any empty spot on the screen.

Also, in the example where you switch the home screen to get the app drawer back, I noticed there is no icon dock at the bottom of the screen. If I am not missing something, then switching to the app drawer home screen presents its own problem as well.

Double tap to sleep ≠ knock code
Double tap to sleep ≠ double tap to wake
Double tap to sleep = double tap to sleep

Installing a third party launcher does not remove any of those features. Third party launchers allow you to customize your gestures. Including making the double tap put your phone to sleep. You can double tap to sleep on any empty space on every launcher that has custom gestures. That includes both Nova and Action Launcher.

And as for getting the app drawer back on the stock launcher, I only briefly watched a video detailing that, but the person called mentioned it's called "easy mode." Anyone with a current LG phone probably recognizes that as the simplified launcher so that definitely wouldn't be a solution.

Looks like the only (and still the best) option is to just use a custom launcher. Unless you rely heavily on smart bulletin and the smart notice widget, it excels in every area over the stock launcher.

Marcus,

I do not have Nova Prime, so I guess I did not notice that. That would solve the problem. Although, the LG stock calendar widgets would be missed. The reason I did not get Prime is because I couldn't find a calendar widget that would match LG's stock widget. Jorte came the closest, but I still prefer the stock widget, since it looks a little more professional to me. Do you have any advice on calendar widgets that would compare, if so, I would consider switching to and buying Nova Prime.

Thanks.

I have knock on/off anywhere with Nova Prime.

Don't like the idea of eliminating an app drawer.... When will 3rd party launchers not be able to create one?

The stock LG calendar is what I miss the most about using Nova, however I'd found DigiCal to be very similar to the stock calendar (both the app and the widgets) and Month Calendar Widget is also a very nice widget.

Those are the best two I could find. Decent month calendar widgets just aren't most calendar app developer's priority.

Third party launchers will ALWAYS have the ability to offer an app drawer. That's not tied to the OS at all. Launchers are just apps and can be designed how the developer sees fit. It'll only be a problem if launcher developers suddenly decide they want to limit our options. If that happens, just roll back to previous versions.

Wait, on second thought, if Google really wanted to screw us over, future versions of Android might now let you change launchers...

Quick sidebar: I have Nova Prime and DigiCal but my calendar shortcut on my home screen does not have a date (it's just DigiCal's app photo) and any replacement icons I use will not change the date automatically to match the current date. Any ideas on that? I want my calendar shortcut icon to show the current date. It's annoying.

When I started reading this thread I expected to be unhappy with the idea of no app drawer but since I have Nova that doesn't matter. But if I were running stock Android, it might annoy me even with the workarounds. Creating a folder on the home screen to house all the apps would be as easy as tapping the app drawer icon, but I think the issue is more just having to get used to the idea of no traditional app drawer. I don't like how on iPhones the apps are all on the main screens. There's a workaround for everything, but still. I'm sure if this becomes the norm we'll all get used to it.

Reading the LG G5 forum it seems a lot of LG owners will be moving along to something else.

I am a G2 then G4 owner.... Now switching to Samsung S7 edge.

I will miss back buttons, which LG ditched anyways, and knock on. G4 boot loop issue I had didn't help me stay with LG either. Then G5 goes out and makes a bigger phone with a smaller screen? They should have somehow kept the G2 bezels for all renditions.

I almost think LG tried to get to far outside the box. I really don't think consumers are going to buy the "friends" stuff. People generally will not put add on stuff on thier phone outside of cases.

Good news is if you get the G5, I suspect the camera and sound modules are going to be 80% off in a year.

I was initially underwhelmed with the G5 and preordered the s7 edge. But I've actually cancelled that now and actually really looking forward to the G5. I plan to keep the phone for a long time and a removable battery and lcd screen help with it lasting longer. Also I had a play with the s7 edge and as lovely as it is, the curves would interfere with my usage.

"Friend's", over time we gain and lose "friends". All those expensive gadgets are going to get forgot at your house or lost in your travels.

I think that's a bit of a crap statement. So if you happen to leave a module at home or lose it, that's going to be LG's fault? And sometimes people lose their actual phone, or forget to take it with them, so are phones themselves a bad idea then?

Lol if people are forgetting their friends module at home or lose it's their own fault.

I love the idea whole idea it's simply brilliant the B&O module looks gorgeous and the camera module will make for some great party photos.

Omg I'm in the exact same boat. I ordered the S7 2 days ago but after pondering and also considering I had an S6 for most of last year and the S7 not being that much different, the G5 started to grown on me just because it is totally different, like literally. I'm very interested In it now and I'm looking forward to It.

I'm counting down the days to preorder... :)
