Turn 4G off when the screen is off?

4G seems to be a pretty big battery drain over 3G even when the phone is idle. Are there any apps that will turn off 4G when the screen is off and turn it back on when you turn the screen back on? This would allow the phone to sync email, contacts ect. over 3G reducing battery use and then give you full access to 4G when the screen is on for web browsing, downloands ect.

Presently, there are no apps to toggle 4G/3G with one press. Once that functionality is available and seamless (it takes a bit of time, sometimes, to switch between radios), there will probably be apps like what you're looking for.

Juice defender deactivates 4g while screen is locked. You can set it to wake the connection at certain intervals while the screen is locked to sync your accts / weather if you wish. It's helped my battery life a lot. There are two versions in the market. I've found the beta to work better. Also search for "network mangelow" for a quick and easy way to toggle between 3g and 4g

Thanks for the info, I was not sure if maybe there was a program like Juice Defender that could do this. I saw the app called Phone Info that can switch between radios so hopefully this can be integrated into an automated program soon.

I imagine the Tasker people will tie that into an update when the 4G toggle is easier.

I don't think Juice Defender just turns off 4G. It turns off all the data connections.
