Turn down volume using speaker phone?

My optimus T has a busted headphone jack. It always thinks that headphones are inserted. I think it's the little headphone plug switch. I've tried all the software fixes as well as the physical. Toothpicks, graphite, blower, etc, etc. It's busted. So the only way to use it as a phone is to turn on the speaker phone. Under GrooveIP, if I turn down the volume all the way, it's like using it like a normal phone on high volume. Using the normal phone app though, it's crazy loud even on low. Is there a way to turn down the speak volume anymore? Any hack or tweak? Right now I stick my thumb over the speaker and it's still way too loud.
