Turn off notification sounds when using phone

I just started using a brand new S9. I have custom ringtones for Ringtone and Notification that are the maximum length (about 20 seconds).

I have set the notifications to be off (phone/settings/call alerts and ringtones)Screenshot_20211011-150743_Call settings.jpg.

When I receive a phone call it plays the sound I have associated with Ringtone which ends when I pick up the call. That part works as expected.

The S9 also plays the notification sound which I can hear over my phone call. When I hang up the notification sound plays its full length as well.

I would have thought I have turned these sounds off as shown in the screenshot (which hopefully got attached to this feed).

Is there another set of settings I am missing to control this behavior?

Thanks

Dave

Welcome to Android Central! That screenshot shows that "Notify during calls" is turned on. Did you mean you turned that off?

No, I left that on so I would know if I got an email or SMS. Neither event has happened while I have been using the phone and I am still getting the Call Started and Call Ended notifications.

The call connect and call end tones should only be heard over the earpiece -- is that what you're talking about? Or are you actually hearing a notification tone play over the main speaker?

It comes over the main speaker. Volume is what you would expect based on the main volume setting for notification sounds.

FYI, I have tried turning on the two "Play Tone when Call" settings, rebooting to "set" the switches, and then turn both off again and rebooted in case switch is frozen. No luck.

I'm trying to understand what's happening.

Are you saying that while on a phone call, someone else calls you and it rings through, over the current call?

Not just a "beep beep", but a full-on ring?

@joeldf, I think the OP is talking about notification tones for when the current call connects and when it has ended.

Just to test -- what happens if you turn off the Notification volume? Do those notification sounds go away?

No, I am saying that when I receive a call it plays two sounds at the same time - the sound associated with "Ringtone" and the sound associated with "Notifications". The Ringtone sound ends when I pick up the call (works correctly). The Notification sound continues over the call I am now taking. My preferred notification sound is 20 seconds long so I hear it for some time. Then, when I disconnect the call, the notification sound plays again for the 20 seconds.

RE: B. Diddy's last post. When I turn notification sound to zero I do not hear anything. I need to hear my notification sound for SMS so when I turn the sound volume back up it errors the same way on a phone call.

Also, I have read that sometimes clearing the cache works in similar situations. I did this with no change in the problem.

If you want to not hear notification while phone volume on go to settings>sounds and vibration>tap volume and adjust the notification bar all the way downScreenshot_20211012-121909_Settings.jpg

@mustang7757: I am confused. I DO want to hear the notification sound on all apps and SMS - everything except phone calls. I want to only hear the Ringtone sound for the phone. If I do your suggestion I won't hear a notification sound for SMS. Am I missing something?

Ok i understand now , what about Do Not Disturb maybe can customize it

I believe that the answer lies in the two "Play tone when Call connects" and "Play tone when Call Ends" switches. For some reason my settings are corrupted. Are there any methods of resetting just this part of the phone (NOT a full reset).

You can try in settings>general management>reset>rest settings

Im rereading your thread , im sorry buy i need little more clarification what you want ?
In your original post you said you dont want have notification while on a call and here this post im quoting now you do want notification to sound except calls , please clarify so we can can better understand and give suggestions

@mustang7757. If I receive a call I get both a ringtone AND a Notification which is triggered by the phone call. I do not want the notification in this case as the ringtone will tell me that the phone is ringing. When I hang up the phone call I now receive a notification that the call is ended. I do not need this as I can see the call is done.

However, I want all the other things that notifications tell me such as SMS or app notifications. They should alert me whether I am on a call or not.
