Turn on WiFi and turn off 3G or mobile networks?

So... never had an Android phone before, so bare with me. This is a basic question, but I couldn't find a direct answer:

If I am home, in which case I have WiFi, and I turn on WiFi and connect, do I have to turn anything off? I don't want to run 3G/4G obviously and waste battery, but I obviously want to continue to make calls and receive texts.

I have been told on here that if you have a wifi connection turn it on and it will save battery. I been trying it at home myself and it seems to work pretty good. There is nothing else you have to turn off you will still receive calls and texts. It was sugegsted to me to download the Y5 app from the app store. I got it today and will try it when I get home.

You should turn off you mobile network(3/4G). You will still be able to do everything with wifi on.

Sent from my evo shift!

Is the Y5 app better than using something like JuiceDefender or Green Button?

I actually downloaded both JuiceDefender and Green Button last night, but both seemed to be a little over my head initially. I can set a default on JD, but what is it actually doing? It also looked like a lot of helpful features are for paid version.

If you are connected to wifi, it automatically overrides any data connection from 3/4g, and does save you battery

I believe you don't need to turn anything off when you are on wifi. If you notice the 3G icon goes away when you are connected to a wifi access point. Its my understanding that all data is then routed over the wifi and the voice network is for voice and sms/mms. Also when on wifi your phone does not have to search for the 3G/4G network so this is supposed to be one advantage of wifi.

With your phone connected to wifi you also need to go into your wifi settings, click menu button and then advanced, change the sleep settings to never. That way your phone will stay connected to the wifi as long as you are in range. If your wifi policy is set to sleep then you will revert back to 3G/4G as wifi connection is cut off when your screen goes off.

Apparently you can use the Y5 app and still use Juice Defender. One of the Mods told me about it today and I just installed it and will check it when I get home. The Y5 app remembers the location of your wifi connections according to your towers or something and only comes on when you are in that location. Once you leave the location it turns itself off. So when you get to a known wifi you turn it on and Y5 app remembers that location according to cell towers or something and every time you get there from then on it turns itself on automatically. Then the wifi uses less juice than the regular data connections and takes over for data purposes. I don't know the details...sorry. I'm just gonna give it a try.
