turn screen off during Google Maps navigation?

My previous phone got screen burn-in from Google Maps navigation mode. Running the same image frame for hours in bright sunlight (requiring maximum screen brightness) is pretty much the worst case for causing burn-in.

I'd like to try to avoid burn-in on my Note9 by having the screen turn off unless there's a navigation prompt coming up (or unless I wake it with "OK Google"). Is there some way to set up that behavior in Google Maps (or in any alternative app)? It needs to work even when the battery is full and the phone is being charged, since the idea is to protect the screen rather than to conserve battery energy.

Just press the power button to lock the phone while you have maps running.

Google maps will still give audio instructions when time to make a turn or take an exit, etc. And then when you do want to look or take a glance at the map, just hit the power button and it will open to your navigation map immediately without having to unlock your phone and then power button again to turn off.

I do this all the time and locking phone just going audio with an occasional glance at map saves a ton of battery when on long trips. Was just using this way a week or so ago when visiting DC and NYC.

Thanks, that's a possible workaround. It's not ideal though because I have the phone windshield-mounted for best visibility, which puts it far enough from me to be awkward to reach while driving.

I always have my phone plugged into either a car adapter or a USB connector during long trips, so I don't need to conserve battery, just screen integrity.

You can't have it all. Just tap the power button. Use an IFTTT recipe. Try Google Assistant for voice command to launch a sceen off app. That's the great thing about Android. You can find a solution to your needs, or use the Playstore to see what others have developed.

I have an 8 so I don't know if possible but can you program the S-Pen to act as a power button? Then you can keep the pen closer to you to unlock/lock phone to view the map. Another idea is if Bixby will unlock with voice command. I disabled Bixby Voice so I won't know.

You can download the Routines app from the Galaxy App store. Or the app may be part of the Good Lock 2018 app. In routines you can program your phone to do things when an app is launched.

"Hi Bixby, turn off the screen" or
"Hi Bixby, screen off"
