Turning off reception

I do not get reception at school. However I do get wifi which I leave on. It seems that my battery drains faster at school because I believe the phone consumes a lot of power searching for signal. Is there a way to turn the reception off while leaving wifi on? I downloaded SMODA widget which apparently turns 3g off but it didn't work for me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Phone is EVO 4g Shift with Android 2.2. Thanks.

Put your phone into Airplane mode. It will turn off 3G but should still give you access to WiFi

You can add the Power Control widget to one of your home screens to make turning it off and on easy.
