Tutorials vs in-game explanation

What is you opinion about game tutorials. Are they needed? or do you prefer to explain game mechanics in-game?

I personally strongly dislike tutorials that need a lot of text to explain and make me usually quit and uninstall a game. Image based tutorials, such as in Angry Birds, are much better in my opinion.

Depends on how simple your app/game is.

Normally, I prefer the in-game stuff (although this can sometimes take ages). In any case, I prefer that I can skip the tutorial (and revisit parts of it at a later time if I need/want the information).

It depends of the vision of your game. Personally I prefer tutorials.
