Two questions for first time android user

After having an iphone for 5 years, I made the switch to an HTC One this week.

Loving it for the most part, still learning how to customize it to my liking. After having an iphone for so long, I didn't even realize how much can be changed.

My first question is about a dead pixel that appears on and off. It has only ever appeared when using the kindle or HBO Go apps, never on anything else. And it doesn't always appear on those apps, either. Any idea what would cause this and should I consider exchanging the phone?

Second, just today the lock screen started acting up a bit. Normally, you can pull up on any of the four apps on the launch bar and unlock the phone while going directly into that app. Tonight, it stopped allowing me to do that. If I pull up on one of the app icons, the phone will unlock but will not go to the app, just to the home page. Also, the app icon does not move like it normally would when I pull it up.

Also, when the screen is locked but "awake", simply touching anywhere on the screen unlocks the phone. I don't think it did that before, but am not sure.

Any thoughts on that?

thanks

Welcome to Android Central! This thread might be helpful for you: http://forums.androidcentral.com/general-help-how/137252-apple-users-guide-android.html

Dead or faulty pixels can occur--the questions are, how much does it bother you, and what is your wireless provider's policy on dead pixels (if they have one at all)? I know that electronics stores often have dead pixel policies for monitors, but not sure if they also apply to phones. If it bothers you, now is the time to bring the phone in to your wireless store (within the first 14 days of owning it) and requesting the exchange.

With regard to the lockscreen issue, have you tried rebooting? And have you checked Settings/Security to see what kind of screen lock is selected? Maybe no screen lock is selected, which is why you're unlocking simply by touching the screen.

I've restarted a few times. A couple times, the lock screen would act normally the first time and then start acting differently again.

Security was set to no lock screen because I didn't want to enter a password, pin, pattern, etc everytime I unlocked it.

I turned security on just now and was still able to unlock it by touching it. So I restarted the phone and the first time I unlocked it, I had to use the PIN. Every time after, I was able to unlock it simply by touching it. I went back into settings and the screen lock is still set to PIN rather than none.

There may also be a security setting for how long to wait before automatically locking. For example, my Razr Maxx is set to lock 30 seconds after going to sleep, so that I don't have to pattern unlock it immediately after the screen times out. But if I leave it alone for more than 30 seconds, then I'd have to pattern unlock again.

The problem with trying to unlock to a specific app sounds like a glitch. Might be another reason to request an exchange.

Ah! I realized what it is. I installed an app called iphone notifications today because I wanted the pop up notifications on my lock screen which I could not figure out how to do. I turned this off and the lock screen is back how I want it.

Of course, now I don't have the notifications that I want..

Great! Don't worry, there are a number of apps out there that might be able to do what you're trying to do. Here's one: NiLS Notifications Lock Screen

You can also search for "lockscreen notification" on Google Play for other possibilities.

What kind of notifications are you looking for? You can change your lock screen settings to send notifications there like email, messages, and reminders.

hey im new to android too and i think i know what your issue with notifications is.

go to settings, personalise and then select lockscreen style.

ive selected "productivity" which i think is the closest behaviour to what we old iphone users are accustomed to. took me a while to figure out why i wasnt getting notifications until i stumbled upon this

hope this helps.
