Two Signal Issues with the GNex

The other thread is getting quite long and there was a lot of hashing out of the details of the signal issues with the GNex so it is hard to figure out from that thread what the issues are. To summarize what I have read, there are two separate signal issues with the GNex:

1) The bars on the GNex show you 4G signal strength whereas all of the other 4G LTE phones show you CDMA signal strength; and

2) The GNex doesn’t grab/hold onto the 4G signal as well as the Razr or the Rezound.

The former issue is easily “corrected” by an OTA update coming in Janurary (although I am not sure it is a good thing to correct it).

The latter issue from what I have read could be due to the GNex threshold being set higher than the other 4G LTE phones - meaning that the GNex will not grab/hold onto the 4G signal when the 4G signal is strong enough for the other LTE phones to grab/hold the 4G signal. From what I am reading, if this is the problem with grabbing/holding 4G signals, this could be fixed by an OTA update of the threshold.

To rephrase that latter point in case it is not clear, if that is the problem, what is happening is that the GNex won't switch from 3G to 4G unless the 4G signal is of a certain strength (i.e., threshold). If it already is receiving a 4G signal, it will drop down to 3G at this threshold signal strength. It does that supposedly to preserve battery time. And whatever that threshold is, it is a stronger signal than the Razr or the Rezound require to grab/hold the 4G signal.

So in areas with good 4G LTE coverage, a GNex operates fine. But in areas where the signal is weak, GNex doesn't give you 4G speeds.

HTH.

i have a crappy signal where i am, -103db. so eveyone who is complaining about signal issue, i wish i had the phone to compare the two signal, til i do all i can say is this signal thing is very weird

there may also be a 3rd issue having to do with authentication, but that should be a network problem and not phone specific.
