Two text became one? after all text had been sent

Hello, hope someone can help. I was texting a two different people the other day, and when I sent the text message, it went to the correct parties, but the conversation showed under one contact. The other persons message was on the wrong text. What would cause this the person i had been texting earlier, all their message ended up on the new text i sent, like it changed names. and it was not a group text.
