TWRP question

I'm running a custom lollipop ROM (illusion) and i made a backup of it today. I'm wanting to test out a new ROM (CyanideL). I made the backup in case i dont like it, i can just restore to how i am now.

If i do decide to restore the Illusion backup i made, do i need too wipe everything before restoring? And will it go back to exactly how i had it?

Yeah, it will go back to how it was when you created backup. No need to wipe everything before restoring.

The act of restoring will wipe those partitions prior to the restore. It's automatic.
