UMS & Disabling 4G

Hi everyone. First time posting here, I'm currently using a (very old) Samsung Fascinate. This will be my next phone, so I've been doing research on its little quirks that have been imposed by Verizon/Samsung. Once I begin using this phone, I'd like to bring back mass storage. Is Easy UMS still the best way to bring it back?

I would also like the ability to disable 4G. I read that an app called "Phone Info" could disable 4G, but its been removed from the play store. Another "Phone Info" app does appear in the play store, but it's not from the same developer. Does anyone here have the APK tucked away in Dropbox or Google Drive that they would be willing to share with me? Or maybe there is a better method for disabling 4G?

I'm waiting for this to become a penny phone on Amazon Wireless, so it might be a while until I actually get it. I plan to root it out-of-the-box, so once I get it, I'll be back to ask your opinions about what's the best method. Thanks everyone! :)

What problem is it that you're trying to solve by using UMS? (I haven't tried that utility, but I'll take a look when I get a chance.)
The PTP/MTP connection types seem to work ok if you're planning on connecting via USB. Then there's Kies Air (or any other application that you may prefer) for WiFi File transfers.

I'm not really trying to solve a problem, I'd just like the ability to choose one or the other (assuming they don't perform exactly the same). This little article states, "Instead of UMS, Samsung Galaxy S3 only features MTP, which is not as easy to use and fast, so many prefer UMS instead." I haven't done any research on MTP Vs. UMS, and I understand that, "...not as easy to use and fast..." is extremely vague, I just figured I'd give the app a try. I've kind of been poisoned against Kies because the version that I use on my Fascinate performs so poorly that I'd just assume forget about it. In the end though, I guess nothing beats un-mounting the card, popping it out, and using a card reader. I think that's the method of file transfer I use most often.

Well, you might want to give MTP a shot before you decide that it's less capable than UMS.
Also, I wasn't referring to the Kies software on your desktop - simply use the Kies Air app (or https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s/details?id=com.anttek.server&token=SZnqnCms or https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...s/details?id=com.sand.airdroid&token=a3O_tfjm or https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...d=com.dooblou.WiFiFileExplorer&token=rT6ZLfqC) on your phone and your browser of choice on your desktop and transfer files that way.
Much less of a hassle than physically moving the SDCard.

Another vote for MTP...just get the latest Samsung USB drivers on your PC, and plug in your phone to your PC via USB. Your phone and its storage will show up on your PC (both the internal "native" sdcard and your "external" extSDcard) just like normal external USB drives. You can easily transfer stuff from your phone to your PC or vice-versa by treating your phone storage just like a normal external USB drive connected to your PC. Easy.

The only time that I could see using a specific app for doing this is if the app has some knowledge of the internal structure of your phone storage (like photo albums or something) that makes it faster for you to go through that app for whatever you're doing. In which case you need to make sure that the app is specifically compatible with your model phone. Otherwise, MTP makes the phone storage look like normal Windows PC storage to your PC, so is really very easy to use.

Thank you so much for the advice and links GSDer and MrDoh! I think I'm a little too concerned with emulating my current smartphone experience. It sounds like MTP works just as well as UMS. I'll need to embrace the changes...like a locked bootloader. I've never had to deal with one of those before! I seriously have to get off this forum though. I don't even own this phone yet. It's $100 on Amazon Wireless right now. I'm desperately trying to wait until it becomes a penny phone, but reading through the stickies and root procedures is too much fun! I bet it's no more than a couple of days until I break down and buy it.

Yeah, good idea to pay attention to the unlocked boot loader thing if you intend to flash a ROM or two. Or even take an OTA after you've rooted *smile*. Interesting road...
