un-cropped profile and wallpaper pics

Anyone able to explain why I cant zoom in or out of a photo while selecting a proflie pic or wallpaper pic with out it being cropped? Seems rediculous that a photo has to be cropped to use it. On any other platform you have the option to zoom out of the photo so that it fits.

Please help with this. Any input is greatly appreciated!
