Unable HDMI Mirroring

Have purchased a Menotek Micro USB to HDMI MHL Adapter and have been unable to play video out to my TV. I use a wall charger to power the adapter. I get no image on the TV and nothing happens on the phone. Do I need to config the phone somehow or should it just work?

Should just work. Once I plug in it mirrors and puts me into landscape. I use the adapter from monoprice.com but it does have to be plugged into power to work

Edit: maybe connect a different HDMI cable to it
