Unable to mute notification sound

I just got the p9. I find that I'm unable to turn off the notification sound for mail received etc. I do not want to put the phone in the silent mode. Please help, as the sound is driving me crazy

Welcome to Android Central! What if you open the Email app, tap Menu>Settings, select the email account, and look for the notification options there? You can usually set the tone to "Silent" or "None."
