AT&T Galaxy S8 Unable to send DTFM tones while on phone call

I am with AT&T.

If I place a call, leave the call screen and return to the dial pad, I am unable to create DTFM tones with the dial pad. Coming back to the dial pad forces you to "dial to add call" meaning pressing the dial pad keys only inputs a number to call - not create DTFM tones. If I make a call and stay in the phone screen and NOT leave it to go anywhere in my phone, I can continue to press the dial pad and create DTFM tones. Any help is much appreciated.

Sorry, I figured it out. If I pull down the information drawer from the top of the screen while in a call and click on the phone app it takes me to the dialer that allows me to press keys and create DTFM tones.
